چکیده

Computational simulation is an important tool for predicting the behavior of physical systems. Many powerful simulation programs exist today. However, using these programs to reliably analyze a physical situation requires considerable human effort and expertise to set up asimulation by transforming a description of a physical system into a representation the simulation program can successfully process. Automating this process is not only of considerable practical importance but also raises significant spatial reasoning issues . The particular aspect of spatial reasoning we consider is the discretization of the spatial domain of a physical system. The discretization should be suitable as input to a partial differential equation solver . The method we use is able use geometrical and physical properties of the system, as well as numerical properties of the simulator to generate an appropriate discretization . The application domain described in this paper is the design of racing yachts.

Intelligent Automated Grid Generation for Numerical Simulations

Numerical simulation of partial differential equations (PDEs) plays a crucial role in predicting the behavior of physical systems and in modern engineering design. However, in order to produce reliable results with a PDE simulator, a human expert must typically expend considerable time and effort in setting up the simulation. Most of this effort is spent in generating the grid, the discretizati...

Intelligent automated quality control for computational simulation

Computational simulation of physical systems generally requires human experts to set up a simulation, run it, evaluate the quality of the simulation output, and repeatedly invoke the simulator with mod-iied input until a satisfactory output quality is achieved. This reliance on human experts makes use of simulators by other programs diicult and unreliable, though invocation of simulators by oth...

Case-Based Reasoning for Control of Spatial Representations

This paper explores the use of methods and mechanisms from case-based reasoning for spatial cognition. In particular, it discusses approaches for tasks where an agent has knowledge available in various formats, and needs to make a choice for the most suitable one. The idea is to view the agent’s repository of previously solved spatial problems as a case base and to store information of the repr...
